New Meteors and Pulsars (Dumitrescu, 1982). For Tape and Percussion. Tape by Iancu Dumitrescu, Soloist - Chris Cutler. Inspired by an event in 1987 when the composer witnessed a meteor impact, this cataclysmic piece is a series of enormous explosions, which are mediated and interspersed with Chris Cutler's electronic drum improvisations. An inspired, innovative and unmissable performance.
Nouvelle Axe (Avram, 1988) Hyperion Ensemble. Fresh from writing a string quartet for the Kronos, the composer develops an intense series of miniature debates, focusing on noise, distortion and small nuances of expression. Challenging, and almost delicate work.
Life On Earth (Cutler, 1998) Hyperion Ensemble with Ana Maria Avram - Prepared Piano, Tim Hodgkinson - Clarinet and Bass Clarinet, Chris Cutler - Percussion. For 'Life On Earth' the music, including dynamics, was determined by a series of cards, and the durations were determined by time it took seven rings of candles to burn down. The intention was to create unusual unbalanced ensembles, with the performers unable to fall into habitual roles. Chris Cutler says,"absorb without listening".
Black Death and Errors in Construction (Hodgkinson, 1988) Hyperion Ensemble with Ana Maria Avram - Piano, Chris Cutler - percussion, Tim Hodgkinson -Clarinet, Bass Clarinet and Tape. Tape by Tim Hodgkinson. The title refers to the reasons why Sienna Cathedral was never finished, and here the Hyperion Ensemble re-invent a piece Tim premiered on his recent CD 'Pragma'. Tim's compositions are gaining a new maturity, and this is a lively and engaging performance.

Already greatly immersed in the aesthetic of 'composing with the sound itself? due to the influence of his teacher George Cacioppo, as well as due to his great admiration for the musics of Varese arid Xenakis, Cosmos was Pape's first attempt to find new large scale musical forms appropriate for the transformation of sound.Tantric Transformations (2002): This is rare work (for me) in that it is for tape alone. All material is derived from a single source -- a short excerpt of Tibetan ritual music. Thus, the title refers to the electroacoustic transformation of this tantric ritual music.
